About Uryu Experimental Forest

Uryu experimental forest was established in 1901 and the oldest experimental forest of Hokkaido University. The forest is mainly natural forest and the area covers about 20,000 ha. The experimental forest was utilized for various research and field classes on forest science, ecology, environmental sciences and others. The headquarter office is located in Aza-Moshiri, Horokanai town, Uryu-gun, Hokkaido, northern Japan.

climate condition

Hot summer and cold winter affected by flat valley topography. The annual mean air temperature is about 3 oC with 60 oC difference ranging from 30oC maximum in around July and – 30oC minumun in February. The annual precipitation is about 1,200 mm and half of them are supplied as snowfall.
Maximum snowpack exceeds 2 meter in middle winter even at flat plane. The minimum record of air temperature was -41.2oC at February 1978. So, cold and heavy-snow is a character of the winter climate here. You might be able to observe the beautiful “Diamond dust” in air at very cold and calm day.
